The dolmens route. Route 3 Alt Empordà

You can leave your car in the car park of the CAT (Tourist Information Centre) of Vilajuïga. Go through the village along the street Carrer Figueres until you come to the square, at which point you must turn left into the street Carrer Sant Sebastià. Go out of Plaça de la Sardana on the right and go straight ahead until you pass under the road. From here onwards you will see the painted «Itinerànnia» signposts: the first indicating that you must turn right.

Continue towards the housing development and go up to the top, where you will find an unpaved track on the right. After a few metres, at a junction of three tracks, make sure you follow the path on the right that goes along by the fields. Carry on, keeping close to the road until you come to a small group of houses named Can Rebequer. Go downhill on the other side of the road, and then cross the main road. Continue along this track, keeping to the right side of the river. The track then turns 90 degrees to the left, crosses the river and starts to go uphill. On this upward stretch you can see the dolmens of Vinya del Rei, off Garrollar, of La Talaia, of Les Ruïnes and of La Carena, an exceptional observation point looking over Alt Empordà plain, until you across the road.

Continue along the right side of the road for approximately a hundred metres, until you come to the next bend. On the right you will see the dolmen named Vinyes Mortes I, and straight after you must take a path that leads to the dolmen Vinyes Mortes II, following the side of the mountain. The path runs through the middle of the forest until it reaches the Vinyes mortes II dolmen. Next you must go back a little until you find the road, cross it and continue on the other side. Go pat Mas Margall country house and then back in the direction of the main road, which you must cross once more. You should now be at the AE154 – Cista del Coll del Bosc de la Margalla intersection. Carry on in the direction indicated on the flag that says Pau 1h10'. On your right you will see the Cista de la Margalla dolmen: from here, you must reverse back and then take the path that goes dow the mountain. In this section there are several yellow painted signpost that can be confusing. Keep following the ones that are about 3 cm high and 10 cm wide. The road cannot be missed. Carry on downwards and enjoy the wonderful views of the Bay of Roses on your left.

You will then come to a white cross, the only evidence of the monumental cross from the former territory of Sant Pere de roes monastery that remains intact until the present day. From here you must carry on until you get to Pau. You must then go through the village, which is clearly indited, and then carry on in the direction of the main road. When you get to the AE156 on in the direction f the main road. Whenyou get to the AE156 intersection, you must take the directiont at says Vilajuïga 40 minutes: it is the street that on you right, located just before the intersection. The track continues straight ahead untileaches Vilajuïga.
