The circular tour of Cós invites you to climb the mountain of Cós, where you will find the castle and the hermitage, and will give you exceptional views of the Montagut plain, the Fluvià path and on clear days also the Empordà plain to the sea.

We leave the town of Montagut at the G49 Itinerànnia sign, located at the intersection between the Main road and Avinguda de les Escoles.
Following the yellow markings we head towards the municipal sports field. Just behind the field on the left, the path climbs through the forest, after approximately 1km, we find the AG1 Pla del Puig intersection. From here we can reach the hermitage of Sant Eudald del Jou.
We continue to the left towards Cós. After approximately fifty minuts, we find a new intersection, the MiO9 Feixes del Cós. From this point we will make a round trip that will take us to the hermitage of Cós and the Castell de Montagut or also called del Cós.

We pass by the ruins of the Cós house and continue until we reach the esplanade where the hermitage and the remains of the castle are located.

You can enter the hermitage which has a porch and exceptional views.

The Cós church is the old chapel of the Montagut castle, which had the Virgin Mary as its patron saint and St. Marc and St. Bartholomew as its co-patron saints.
Mentioned as early as 1105 (Santa Maria de Montagut), it is a small building with a bell tower where a Marian image from the end of the 12th century was venerated, the Virgin Mary of Cós with the Child on her knees, which was destroyed in 1936 (the current one is a reproduction made by the sculptor Salgueda, from Olot).

All that remains of the original castle is the base of the medieval tower. We can also see the walls, although they are more recent.
The castle tower has been recently restored and is open during the day and can be climbed, it is also a formidable viewpoint.

The castle of Montagut, mentioned as early as 1070 (in the 11th century it was called “castrum de Monteacuto quod vocatur Corz”, in the county of Besalú), was given in 1119 by the viscountess Ermessenda, lady of Beuda and Montagut, to her grandson Udalard II, viscount of Besalú, and after became part of the viscountcy of Bas. Through the marriage of Sibil·la de Palau, it passed to the counts of Empúries (13th century) and in the 14th century it formed part of the barony of Castellfollit. In 1599 Guerau de Cruïlles de Santapau i de Cabrera received the title of count of Montagut, baron of Castellfollit, and the title later passed to the Negrell family, the Margarit family, marquises of Aguilar, and the Bou family.

We go back along the same path until we reach the intersection of the Feixes del Cós MiO9, the route now continues towards the La Cometa neighborhood. We follow the yellow markings along the path, cross a track and continue again along the path until we reach the Font de la Cometa, and continue to the La Cometa.
We continue the descent into the neighborhood following Carrer de Sant Grau, we go right for a short stretch along Carrer Sant Bartomeu and turn towards Carrer Comanegre, until we find the intersection MiO10 where the bike path begins. We follow it, a few meters ahead we find the intersection MiO8, there is one and a half kilometers left that we always do on the bike path until we reach Montagut, where we started the route.
