From Campdevànol to Ripoll and back through ancient roads. Route 6 Ripollès

The main interest of this route is that runs along the ancient roads that in the old days linked Campdevànol and Ripoll on both sides of the river Freser. It is surprising the abundance of well preserved forests and agricultural plains.

The route begins at Clavé square, just opposite the town hall. Walk along Girona street, at the end of it, there is a beautiful Gothic cross. From here you can see the church of “Sant Cristòfol” dating back to the late nineteenth century. Continue parallel to the railway until you find a level crossing, R54 sign Pujada de Vista Alegre and we start following the yellow marks.

Cross the railway and keep walking next to it, now on the other side and following the Creu street until its end, R45 sign Barri de la Creu. At this point you find the old livestock road once used to take the cattle up to the high Pyrenees. The old road that led to La Pobla de Lillet, in the Berguedà county shared part of its way with the livestock road.

Walk on the remains of this historical road while crossing the river Merdàs by a concrete driveway. Climb along the wide main trail until the first bend where you take a narrow path that gains altitude quickly to meet again the main trail near the “Estiulella”farm. Stay on the trail and soon you will go deeper into a forest. Leave the main trail and take a little path until you get to a stream. Climb up until you reach a hill with a crossroads. Walk down a path through a forest along the Freser valley leading you to the “Vilar” house. A few meters up, the path will take you to a trail, R15 El Vilar.

While going downhill the trail will take you to the recreation area of Ordina, after following a stream for a while and passing under the railway. There you find the springs of “Tòtil” and “La Roca”. Keep walking on a paved road until you find a bridge, R16 sign Pont de la Farga. Cross the bridge and walk past the Palau forge, nowadays a museum.

Follow the “Prat”, “Mercaders” streets and in "Sant Eudald square" goes to “Sant Pere” street until you arrive at the main square of Ripoll, with the Santa Maria monastery in front of you, with its magnificent bell tower and unique Romanesque portal. Go up the stairs located between the church of “Sant Pere”, and the Ethnographic museum. Walk along the “Raval de Sant Pere” street, once the old road leading north to the valley of Ribes and to the neighbouring county of La Cerdanya. You will pass by a couple of springs and a ditch.

The street ends at Font del Sant spring, R17 sign. Climb up steeply through the old road surrounded by thorns. At this point you can still see some vestiges of the old pavement. The road becomes a wide track with paved stretches and goes up the Freser valley above the Rocafiguera industrial estate. Near “Can Vilalta” the track follows an open channel that will accompany you until almost Campedvànol. Once past the funeral home and crossed the Maiols stream you must follow a path on your left that will lead you once again near the channel. Stay on this path and after the R44 sign Casanova de Baix, cross the road through the underpass and after crossing the river, follow the riverside path to the stairs. We climb them, go left along the road and immediately right along the Gala street you will get to the Clavé square, the starting and finishingpoint of this circular route.
