Route Sant Eudald del Jou. Route 1 Parishes of Alta Garrotxa

One of the meanings of the word Jou is pass between two mountains. The position of the small church of Sant Eudald at the foot of a gentle pass between the mountains El Cos and Serra de Palomeres is confirmation of the descriptive nature of this toponym

Start at signpost G49 Montagut and head towards ‘Ermita de Sant Eudald de Jou (pels Vilars)’. Leave the village almost immediately and, once past the local football ground, turn left leaving the minor road and start up a dirt track.

Follow the track as far as a water deposit, where you should pick up a path heading up to the left into a mixed holm-oak and pine forest. Continue to climb along the clearest of the paths until you come to a track and signpost AG1 Pla del Puig indicating you towards ‘Ermita de Sant Eudald de Jou (pels Vilars)’.

Follow the yellow paint marks along this forest track to a asphalted road. Here, turn right and continue until the paint marks point you left down a broad track.

Continue along this track until it veers right. Here pick up a path into the forest – a short-cut to the church of Sant Eudald de Jou that avoids the bends in the track –and start to climb. After just a few metres you come out onto the track again; turn left and continue the climb up to the church alternating track and path.

Once you have visited the church, continue straight on and pick up the path that heads into the woods. This path will take you out on to a track, where you should turn right to enjoy good views south over the valley of the river Fluvià.

Follow the yellow paint marks as far as signpost AG2 Planseslloses pointing you right towards Montagut. Follow first a track and then a path off to the right into a holm-oak forest and past the shrine of Planseslloses.

This path then starts to drop down to the bridge of Pont de Llierca and signpost G47; from here, head towards Montagut.

Follow the road but soon turn left along a track that will take you to an area of fields. Continue past an abandoned building, and then along a path heading into the woods and out to a track running parallel to the river Llierca.

Follow this track until the yellow paint marks point you up towards a house, Can Xicó. Keep straight on uphill to the GIV-5233, the road from Montagut to Sadernes. Turn left and in 300 m you’ll be back at your starting point.
